PROFESSOR TONY JUDT
Leading historian of modern Europe who has died aged 62.

Professor Tony Judt was a leading historian and political thinker. He was a widely respected intellectual who wrote, amongst many other books and essays, a highly acclaimed history of postwar Europe. His willingness to speak his mind and challenge received views on a range of issues made him some enemies. In particular, a controversial essay arguing for a unified state in which Israelis and Arabs could live side by side attracted strong criticism from Zionists. Two years ago he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. As his body deteriorated, Tony dictated a highly personal series of reflections on his life which were published in the New York Review of Books. Tony Judt was born into a family of Jewish immigrants to London. His father was Belgian and his mother’s family had come from Russia. The academic career which took him to New York University began in Cambridge.

Matthew spoke to his friend, the journalist and political pollster Peter Kellner, and to Timothy Garton Ash, Professor of European Studies in the University of Oxford.

Tony Robert Judt was born 2 January 1948 and died 6 August 2010.
