本日は私が3年前にウィリアム・モリスギャラリー William Morris Galleryを初めて訪問した記念日です。またいつかお邪魔したいなと思って、ちょっと調べてみると今年の４月から1年間閉館するようで、訪問するなら4月より前にお越しください、とのメッセージが。
それまでに行けるといいな、と思いながら Wikipedia でさらに調べてみると、どうも2007年に閉館の危機に見舞われたようで、私がお邪魔した2008年以前のことですが、当時はこじんまりとした、確かにちょっと寂しいギャラリーではあるな、とは思いましたが、そういう状況にあったことには全く気付きませんでした。それ以降、William Morris Gallery Development Project が進行しており現在、その最終段階で、助成金を獲得したりで今回の改築計画になったようです。
文化施設はいずこもその維持が大変ですが、ここはパトロンだけでなく付近の住民の皆さんの運動もあったのでしょう。
Visting information:
The Gallery will temporarily close to the public in April 2011 for just over a year whilst the building works and refurbishment takes place. A more detailed schedule of works will be available soon.

During the temporary closure some of the collections will go into storage but we aim to keep as much as possible publicly accessible.
Within the Borough, a small but representative display will be housed at Vestry House Museum. We are also collaborating with 2 Temple Place, an historic central London venue, to display highlights from the collection in autumn 2011. For more information please visit our What's On page.
