Preludes

Preludes

Debussy is closer to the expressionism of Schoenberg than to the chiselled sonorities of a Chopin or the extravagant virtuosity of a Liszt, even if his refined art can still be seen in the line of tradition of 19th-century music. This is frequently forgotten in the interpretation as well as the assessment of his oeuvre. Debussy himself decried the concept of musical impressionism because he feared, rightly, that superficial refinement would degenerate into musical mist, concealing the subtleties of a new musical idiom and its structural logic. Thus, for example, instead of heading his 24 “Préludes” in two books with programmatic titles in his autograph score, he appended them at the bottom of the individual pieces. Perhaps, even though their popularity makes it almost impossible, we ought simply to forget about the titles when playing or listening to these pieces and recall something else that Debussy once said: “Music is a free art gushing forth, an open-air art boundless as the elements, the wind, the sky, the sea.” It is in this manner – sans rigeur, as Debussy repeatedly marked his music – that Alexei Lubimov plays the “Préludes”. The recording also contains the “Trois Nocturnes” in Maurice Ravel’s two-piano transcription as well as a two-piano arrangement of Debussy’s seminal orchestral masterpiece, the “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune”.

“I wanted to hear Debussy in a different timbral guise, cloaked in the early 20th century colours that I would find on unique, specially selected instruments… In my search for an inspiring special sound I stumbled upon two excellent pianos that truly seduced me and breathed fresh life into the music… The music revealed itself to me from unknown angles, and like Ulysses bewitched by the Sirens, I let my pianos sing with their own voices and guide me into uncharted realms.” – Alexei Lubimov

Alexei Lubimov's 1990 Erato Mozart Piano Sonatas

Alexei Lubimov is a very interesting pianist with some excellent recent releases on the Zig-Zag label of Beethoven Beethoven - Late Piano Sonatas - Op 109, 110 and 111 and Schubert Schubert: Impromptus [performed on Joseph Schantz 1830], played on keyboard instruments roughly contemporaneous with the composition of the works in question. This inexpensive Warner Classics card box takes us back to the days of the French Erato label with a complete set of Mozart's piano sonatas played on three different fortepianos. I have to say that, for me, not all of this is great music, but it is always entertaining; Lubimov's way with these works is very pleasing to my ears.

The set was recorded in January and February of 1990, with K279-281 following in July of that year. The sound quality is excellent throughout, as is often the case when you come across the name Yolanta Skura in CD booklets. The first 6 sonatas take up the first 2 CDs and Lubimov chose to play them on a fortepiano built by Claude Kelecom in Brussels in 1978 based on an original by Johann Andreas Stein dating from 1788; it has a light sound with rapid decay.

Sonatas 7-9, which take up CD 3, are played on a slightly beefier fortepiano built by Marc Ducornet in Paris in 1984 - this is also based on Stein's originals.

The final 3 CDs, containing sonatas 10-18, the Fantasy in C minor K475, and the Allegro in G minor K312, are all played on a Christopher Clarke fortepiano built in 1986. This instrument sounds lovely and is based on an Anton Walter from around 1795.

Although I tend to prefer listening to Mozart on early keyboard instruments, I think that there is room for a set or two on modern pianos, too, as a complimentary experience. The great set from Klara Wurtz on Brilliant Classics is a good choice Mozart - Piano Works (5 CD Boxset), as is the critics favourite from Uchida Mozart: The Piano Sonatas.

Throughout this set, Alexei Lubimov takes what sounds to me a sensible approach to speed, not rushing and not spacious; perhaps he could have been just a little more lively in some of the late sonatas, but his style suits these pieces in the main.

Look out for Alexei Lubimov in Brahms Brahms - Piano Works and contemporary works - he isn't so well known, not having been subject to record company hype, but he is a consummate artist.

Highly recommended!
