8月から英語漬け

円高（139.858円／£）と最近 Amazon UK で値下がりしたこと（22％引きで£152.09）とで、とうとう購入することを決めました。17.5％のＶＡＴがない代わり送料（£7.98）込みで£137.42。ほんの1箇月前、私なんかが購入するのは余りに無謀、と日記に書いたばかりなのに。
以後、あらゆる生活費を切り詰めるとともに、8月からは英語漬けになることをここに誓います。

長年いつかはＯＥＤ、と思い続けてきましたが、思えば丸谷さんの『ロンドンで本を読む』でアンソニー・バージェスのＯＥＤのＣＤ−ＲＯＭ版の書評を読んだことが最終的なトリガー（弾き金）になったようです。これだと特定の作家からの引用文は一括して瞬時に知ることができる、その一作品からの引用文を取り出すことさえ可能で、バージェス自身の著作からは 68 の章句が引用されているのが分かった、とのことですが、これはＣＤ−ＲＯＭならではの本当にすごいことだと思います。

なお、後日(8月13日)、実際に検索してみたところ、バージェス（A. Burgess）からの引用は 72 あって「ＭＦ」とか「The Doctor Is Sick」といった作品からの引用が多いようでした。「時計じかけのオレンジ」からはわずか1例です。「銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイド」のダグラス・アダムズ（D. Adams）は 13 もありました。
ちなみにモーム（W. S. Maugham）が 323、オーウェル（G. Orwell）が 493、グリーン（G. Greene）は 567、ウォー（E. Waugh）は 566 でしたが、ウォーには Edwin Waugh という方の分も検索では含まれてしまいました。ウッドハウス（Wodehouse）が 1545、ジョイス（Joyce）なんか 1880 もあります。

2. Warranties

2.2 Save as provided in clause 2.1, the Material is provided "as is" and OUP expressly excludes to the maximum extent permitted by law, all other representations, warranties, conditions or other terms, express or implied, including:

2.2.1 (save where the end user is a consumer), the implied warranties of non-infringement, satisfactory quality, merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose; and

2.2.2 that the operation of the Material will be uninterrupted or free from errors.

3. Limitations of Liability

3.1 Save as provided in clause 3.2, OUP's entire liability in contract, tort, negligence or otherwise for damages or other liability shall be the replacement of the media in which the Material is delivered to the end user or return of the price paid for the Material.

3.2 OUP does not seek to limit or exclude liability for death or personal injury arising from OUP's negligence.

4. Term and Termination

4.1 This Licence shall commence on the date that this Licence is accepted by the end user and will continue until terminated:

4.1.1 by mutual agreement of the end user and OUP; or

4.1.2 upon the end user breaching any of the terms of this Licence.

4.2 Upon termination of this Licence, the end user shall cease using the Material and destroy all copies thereof (including stored copies).

5. Jurisdiction

5.1 This Licence will be governed by English Law and the English Courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction.
