本日は作曲家 Steve Reich の75歳の誕生日。

これまで Words and Music でその作品がしばしば取り上げられ、ピーター・バラカンさんの「ウィークエンドサンシャイン」6月25日の放送では加藤訓子さんのＣＤ Kuniko Plays Reich を紹介されていたのですが、実は、今朝の BBC Radio 3 のクラシック番組で Safri Duo の演奏による Nagoya Marimbas を聴いて初めてその名前をそれと意識いたしました。
それにしても曲名に Nagoya が入っているようなものがあるんですね。これも初めて知りました。
とても不思議な、気になる曲で、あれっ、という感じで思わず曲名を確認した次第。プレゼンターの Sara Mohr-Pietsch は名古屋をちゃんと Nagoya と発音していましたがＨＰのクレジットでは Nogoya。そんなものでしょう。

Nagoya Marimbas (1994) is somewhat similar to my pieces from the 1960s and ‘70s in that there are repeating patterns played on both marimbas, one or more beats out of phase, creating a series of two part unison canons. However, these patterns are more melodically developed, change frequently and each is usually repeated no more than three times, similar to my more recent work. The piece is also considerably more difficult to play than my earlier ones and requires two virtuosic performers.
調べてみたら初演は1994年12月21日で、オープンしたばかりの名古屋のしらかわホールで演奏されていました。その後、世界のいろいろな場所で演奏されたりＣＤが発売されているんですが、Nagoya がその名をこの曲で世界の人々に知っていただけたら本当に素晴らしいですね。
