この本によりますと、オーウェルのパブ「水月」が書かれた1943年頃のロンドンのパブでは、マイルドなビールが一般に飲まれていたようです。

Mild was the most popular drink in London pubs from around the 1850s to the 1950s, the only beer you would be served if you went into the public bar and asked for 'a pint'. It was frequentry drunk out of the curious salmon-pink pottery pint mugs.
